Aesthetic dentistry

Aesthetic dentistry offers both physical and psychological benefits. An unattractive mouth can make you miserable, but a dazzling smile can improve your self-esteem. A smile can also speak volumes about your health, how you take care of yourself and how old you look.

The perfect smile is about the position of the teeth, how the uppers are positioned against the lowers, where the gum position is and how the lips fall against the teeth and frame the smile.

Aesthetic dental treatment options include the following:

  • Whitening
  • Contouring
  • Composite tooth coloured restorations
  • Veneers
  • Crowns and bridges
  • Removable partial dentures
  • Full dentures
  • Implants
  • Correction of gummy smiles with crown lengthening, lip repositions and orthognathic surgery
  • Cerec (Cadcam) porcelain restorations

  Veneers

Your dentist determines if you are a good candidate for veneers.

Veneers are ultra-thin, custom-made laminates that are permanently fixed directly to the teeth. They are an option to change the size, shape, position and colour of the teeth.

Veneers are used to close gaps, straighten teeth, replace worn edges or resurface discoloured teeth that did not get white enough with the whitening procedures.
The best candidates for veneers are people whose teeth are healthy and free of decay and periodontal disease.
Unlike a crown, which cover the entire tooth a veneer cover mainly the visible front part of the tooth and slightly wraps over the biting edge.

First visit – You and your dentist select a smile style and colour.
The teeth are prepared by removing about 0.5 to 1 mm of enamel from the front sides so that the tooth don’t look big or bulky once the veneer is attached. Your dentist makes an impression of the prepared tooth to be used by the dental laboratory.
Temporaries are made so that you don’t walk around with unsightly teeth. The temporaries are not as strong as the final veneers, so you will have to restrict you diet to soft foods and because they are all connected, flossing these teeth will be impossible.

With the final veneers everything will be back to normal and you can floss these teeth individually.
The dental laboratory will need one to two weeks to fabricate the veneers.

Second visit – When you return the veneers they will be checked for fit, shape, size and colour. Small adjustment can be made.
The veneers are then permanently bonded to the teeth with resin cement.
Veneers are beautiful but not indestructible so you will have to take care of them.
Avoid biting your nails, opening things and chewing very hard objects like ice with them.
