The following procedure will occur: A full oral and facial examination will be done. Once that has been completed, a set of x-rays will be taken. The x-rays will be handed to one of the dentists within the practice. The dentist will examine the x-rays for any problems such as fillings that leak, Periodontitis (Alveolar Bone loss), Abscesses and Dental Carious lesions (Dental Cavities). When any of the abovementioned problems have been identified, a treatment plan and quotation will be given to the patient. Once an agreement has been reached, an appointment will be made with one of the dentists to treat the affected area. The oral hygienist focuses on the prevention of oral diseases. This is done in the following manner: Firstly a full mouth scale, polish and floss will take place. (This procedure prevents plaque formation – which in turn prevents dental carious lesions – “cavities” as well as Gingivitis – “gum infection” from developing) Once this treatment has been performed dental hygiene education will be given to the patient. Correct brushing and flossing techniques will be discussed with the patient. Thereafter fluoride treatment will be done in order to treat tooth sensitivity and to strengthen tooth enamel (which also help in the prevention of dental carious lesions). We recommend that you visit a dental hygienist twice a year. With regard to children it is of vital importance for them to visit the oral hygienist from a young age (four years old), thus they can familiarise themselves with the environment and they may be taught correct brushing techniques. Children’s first permanent molars also develop at a young age (between six and seven), therefore fissure sealants are placed on them as dental carious lesions are very likely to develop on these molars. (Usually children struggle to clean their back teeth). Patients who wish to have teeth whitened can also have this done at the dental practice. The patient has a choice of two methods: Brighten your smile |
